Using data visualizations and analytics to guide school improvement at the district and campus level.
McKinney ISD recently introduced a new approach towards monitoring system-wide student progress.  In this session, the presenters will discuss ways to simplify the target setting process and identify critical transitions for students as they matriculate through the school system.  This framework is built on the simple belief that if students are successful in meeting targets early on they are more likely to meet subsequent targets as they advance from one grade to the next.  To support these efforts, the district partnered with a solution provider to personalize the work.  With the help from IO Education, campus leaders were able to leverage virtual data walls as powerful testimony in identifying where to mobilize resources.  Attendees will hear from two campus leaders in how they uniquely raised the bar for student learning.  For one principal, this meant taking a high-achieving campus to the next level and creating the culture to support these expectations.  For the other principal, where the student population was much more diverse, this meant challenging the naysayers and proving them wrong.

Leveraging Change Management to Improve Campus Culture and Staff Morale
Implementing new initiatives has the potential to empower staff and improve morale, or demoralize staff and damage campus culture. How can an instructional leadership team leverage the implementation of new initiatives to improve campus culture and staff morale? Our instructional leadership team, composed of administrators, instructional partners, and educational technologists, will share our approach to implementing new initiatives in a way that promotes a positive campus culture and improves staff morale while improving learning experiences for students and teachers. This approach combines a practical combination of management, leadership, and interpersonal skills along with collaboration. It also relies on four main components important in change management: (1) trusting individual professionalism, (2) honoring what individuals already do and building on those strengths, (3) long-term planning rooted in the idea of patience and persistence, and (4) differentiating implementation goals and timelines to meet the unique needs of each staff member. By applying these components consistently, instructional leadership teams can simultaneously implement district and campus initiatives while improving campus culture, staff morale, and learning experiences.

Can’t See the Forest for the Trees? Growth-Oriented Teacher Supervision
In robotically trying to observe and document rubric components, principals concern themselves with compliance rather than supervising or coaching….they “can’t see the forest for the trees.”  They are so concerned with checking the boxes, filling in the forms, checking teacher goals, and linking observations to rubrics to meet administrative requirements, that they have lost sight of the purpose of effective teacher supervision….to grow teachers and improve student learning.  With mandated state requirements, districts should take the time to reevaluate purpose, effectiveness, analysis of ALL data, results, and their model in general.  Bring meaning to compliance.
The session will highlight the following:
  • Taking a step back to determine if all the “pieces” of their system add value
  • How to be compliant with state regulations, but use them to your advantage
  • Look at growth-oriented frameworks, not laundry lists of components.
  • Since student testing is still required, use it meaningfully, not for punishment
  • Getting teachers involved in their own supervision process…done “with” them not “to” them
  • Learning how technology can help principals and teacher in a reflective process
 Participants will have the opportunity to interact with the presenter during the presentation.
